Small town bees

Ah… the combination of a warm welcome and ‘you aren’t from around here stares’ immediately told us we’d be enjoying our breakfast.

 Having been in many local diners and hole-in-wall eateries on our bike tours, we recognize a good local breakfast spot from those looks.

Glancing around, we quickly seat ourselves at the bar.  It’s obvious the locals have their normal tables and we’d best not interfere with that.

Our food arrives and we request some honey for our biscuits.  The waitress replies “we don’t have any”.

But then a few minutes later she returns, with a jar of honey and a smile.  

“I borrowed this from that gentleman over there. He brings his own homegrown honey. I have to take the jar back to him but use as much as you want.  He has bees”.

The honey was sweet, pure and fresh.

We stopped by the table of 8 older gentleman to thank them for sharing the honey.

We half-expected an offer to sell us some. Instead, we were told that the honey we had is good but the dark honey is even better.

This. This is why small town charm gets me every time.
